It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of James Elliot Oliver (Jamie), who died on 25th June 2025 in the caring hands of St Columba’s Hospital.
Jamie, of Edinburgh and Bedrule, was the elder son of the late James Scott Oliver WS and the late Mary Elliot Oliver. He was a devoted partner to Catherine Smith, a much-loved father to Maria, a cherished brother to Tizzie, Toni and John, and a proud uncle to George, Henry, Tara, Mia and Andrea.
An OG (1965-69), Jamie was a passionate ambassador for the College throughout his life. He served as a member of the OG Club Committee and played a key role on the 150th Anniversary Ball Committee. He also served as Chairman of the OG Club for two terms, during which he was a strong advocate for broadening access to the College, championing bursaries for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Jamie’s connection to Glenalmond was deeply rooted- his daughter Maria, his brother John, and his nephew George all followed in his footsteps as pupils.
Born into a family long established in the Hawick area, Jamie came from a line of distinguished solicitors and bankers. The family firm of Geo & Jas Oliver WS continues to this day, now run by his brother John and nephew Henry, the fifth and sixth generations respectively. After attending Cargilfield School and Glenalmond, Jamie followed in the family tradition and pursued a career in banking, joining the Royal Bank of Scotland, where he served with dedication for 45 years.
Jamie was also a respected Trustee of the Trefoil Charity, and a man of many passions. He found great joy in fishing- particularly in the Outer Hebrides and, annually, in Argentina.
Jamie will be fondly remembered by all who knew him, and his warmth, commitment, and generous spirit will be greatly missed by the Glenalmond community and far beyond.
