Stuart Smellie, Reids 1973-79
Stuart was many things. A husband, a father, a doctor and a translator. He was a lover of old buildings, gruesome thrillers, seventies and eighties rock and Scottish and Irish folk music. He was a passionate fisherman on both land and sea.
Born and brought up in Glasgow he won scholarships to Glenalmond and later St John’s College, Cambridge. He had a formidable intellect; more than one colleague observed that he was probably the cleverest colleague they had worked with. The corollary of this was that he was easily bored, and, sometimes at least, did not do enough to conceal this! He was at his most engaged, and impressive, when grappling with unexplained clinical problems.
However, he was low key about his professional achievements preferring to show off his family rather than his career. He is sorely missed by family, friends and colleagues
He leaves his wife Gillian, and daughters, Eloise, Beatrice and Susannah
