Charlie was born on 15th May 1947 to James Patrick Martin-Bates (Patchells  1925-1930) and Dorothy Clare.  He was the youngest of three with two older sisters.  After studying medicine he became a very popular GP in a medical practice in Reading.  In 1978 he married a Bulgarian lady, Eva Gabbova, and they had one son, Alexander ("Alexi").  Sadly, Eva died from cancer in 2001. 

Many years later he met Jane who became his companion on camping and canoeing holidays.  Around 2020 Charlie was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.  He and Jane were married in 2021. 

He passed away on 19th August 2022.  A memorial event/gathering was held at his house in Reading on 29th October.  Charlie is survived by his wife Jane, his son Alexander (Alexi), his daughter-in-law Cressida,  his grandchildren Sophia and Lewis, and his eldest sister Penelope.
