It is with great respect and admiration that we remember Gordon Robert Fergusson Wishart, who passed away on 19 September 2025 at the age of 95.

Born on 25 September 1930 in Srinagar, Kashmir, India, to Scottish parents, Gordon spent the early years of his life surrounded by adventure, family love, and his faithful dog, Pete. At the age of five, he moved to Scotland for his education, cared for by devoted relatives in Glasgow while facing the challenges of separation from his parents and health issues.

Gordon’s formative school years at Croftinloan and Glenalmond (Trinity College) were distinguished by sporting success and a burgeoning curiosity about the wider world. By age 15, he aspired to be a doctor, dentist, or hotel manager. Ultimately, after the advent of the NHS and in light of his academic results, he chose a career in Hotel Management. Following World War II, Gordon studied at the prestigious Ecole Hôtelière in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he developed lifelong values of excellence, family unity, curiosity, and a touch of mischief.

Fluent in French, German, and Italian, Gordon worked in renowned hotels across Europe and Scotland, including Hotel Briedenbacherhof in Düsseldorf, and Turnberry and Gleneagles in Scotland. He helped found Factory Canteens in England before joining Sutcliffe Catering Group, working alongside noted figures such as John Sutcliffe and England cricketer Ken Graveney. In 1961, he moved to Scotland with his wife Patricia, leading SCG Scotland to great success and earning a Harvard MBA in 1972.

Relocating to Leicester in 1973, Gordon revitalized SCG Midlands, modernising its systems and expanding services to schools, hospitals, and major companies. In 1986, he became CEO of Norfolk & Norwich Health Authority, commissioning the new N&N Hospital, before later transitioning to a successful career as a financial advisor with Norwich Union.

Retirement at 70 opened a decade of travel across all seven continents, creating cherished memories with his wife and grandchildren. Despite a lifelong battle with asthma, Gordon enjoyed sailing, golf, and squash, pursuing each with fierce competitiveness yet enduring graciousness.

Gordon’s love of sport began at Glenalmond, where he developed a lifelong passion for golf, squash, and sailing, often sharing these pursuits with his family in spirited competition and joyful adventure.

Gordon and Patricia’s 64-year marriage was a partnership built on love, humour, and mutual support. His generosity, curiosity, and steadfast optimism inspired all who knew him.

Gordon Wishart lived a life of dedication to family, career, and adventure. His legacy endures in the lives he touched, the institutions he shaped, and the values he instilled in his family. He will be fondly remembered by the OG community and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
