We are saddened to share the news of the passing of Willie Cheyne (Goodacres 1970-1974), who died peacefully at home in Braemar on 21 March 2025, surrounded by his partner, Dawn, and eldest daughter, Abigail.
Willie attended Glenalmond during the early 1970s, where he was known less for academic success and more for his spirited and unconventional approach to school life. A strong swimmer, skilled shot, and cross-country runner, he also stood out for his enthusiasm for acrobatics, performing in a display team that impressed younger pupils with vaults and somersaults.
He developed what his family described as a healthy cynicism toward authority, often pushing boundaries with wit and inventiveness. One enduring story, shared at his funeral by his brothers John (Goodacres 1964-69) and Matthew (Goodacres 1975-79), recalled how he avoided expulsion by convincing his housemaster that a shelf of suspicious bottles was not contraband, but “art”- a performance that became part of his school legend.
After Glenalmond, Willie joined the Royal Artillery before retraining as a BASI ski instructor. He spent several years working at the Cairnwell Ski School, while also taking on a variety of summer roles, from European minibus tour leader to North Sea roughneck.
Following the birth of his first daughter, Abigail, he embraced a more settled life, joining the Scottish Ambulance Service, where he served communities across the North East of Scotland with dedication and care. His second daughter, Jessica, was born in 2000.
Willie remained an active and much-loved member of the Braemar community, contributing significantly to the Braemar Golf Club and The Glenshee Ski Patrol alongside his professional work. His funeral at St Margaret’s in Braemar was standing room only- a testament to the lasting impact he had on those around him.
He is survived by his partner Dawn, his daughters Abigail and Jessica, three grandchildren, his mother, and his brothers John and Matthew.
We extend our sincere condolences to all of Willie’s family and friends.
