We are delighted to celebrate the success of OG George Fleming (Reid’s, 2007–2012), who has been honoured with the BBC Radio 1 Dance Impact Award for his outstanding contribution to charity through his work with Save Our Scene (SOS).

George founded Save Our Scene during lockdown while at home on Arran, driven by his passion for music and community. SOS is dedicated to preserving the UK’s live music ecosystem, a sector currently facing a major crisis. Over the past four years, approximately 30% of music venues have closed, largely due to rising rents, increasing operational costs, and the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Through public demonstrations, media campaigns, and high-profile partnerships, SOS has brought national attention to the challenges facing grassroots music venues. One of its key initiatives, launched in collaboration with the Music Venue Trust (MVT), has been advocating for a £1 ticket levy on stadium and arena events.

The campaign has gained significant traction, with Coldplay, Katy Perry, and Sam Fender all committing to contributing a portion of their UK tour proceeds to the newly established Liveline Fund, which will be distributed in partnership with MVT. The UK government also stated its intention to introduce a mandatory levy across all major UK shows if industry leaders do not voluntarily take action.

George said: "The path to headlining Glastonbury and selling out Wembley begins in small, intimate spaces. These venues are where artists hone their craft, build their audience, and lay the foundation for future success. If we continue to lose them, we risk losing our culture as we know it."

George’s work has made a national impact, with him attending discussions at 10 Downing Street in 2024 and looking ahead, George hopes to see SOS and The Liveline Fund become permanent fixtures in the UK music industry, ensuring that grassroots venues and independent artists continue to thrive.
