Dr Murray Kirkwood (OG, 1939- 1944)
At 99 years young, Dr Murray Kirkwood stands as a remarkable link between Glenalmond College’s past and present- a proud OG whose life has been defined by service, sport, and community.
Arriving at Glenalmond in 1939, Murray’s school years were shaped by the backdrop of the Second World War. Like many of his generation, he went on to lead a life characterised by resilience, commitment, and a strong sense of duty. His enduring friendships from school are a testament to the lasting impact of those formative years; he notably maintained an over 80-year friendship with a fellow pupil (Dr Harry Morgan) whom he met on his very first day at the College.
Professionally, Dr Kirkwood built a distinguished career in medicine, becoming widely respected not only for his expertise but for his kindness and dedication to the communities he served. His warmth, modesty, and genuine care for others have been recurring themes in the many tributes shared by those who know him.
Alongside his professional life, Dr Kirkwood has maintained a lifelong passion for sport, particularly rugby. A former player with Kelvinside Academicals in the late 1940s, he remains closely connected to the game today. Even in his late nineties, he continues to be a familiar and celebrated presence at Scotstoun, where he has taken part in special matchday moments, including delivering the match ball for the Glasgow Warriors this past weekend- a fitting honour for someone whose love of the sport has spanned generations.
Now approaching a century of life, Dr Kirkwood embodies the very best of the Glenalmond spirit: loyalty, humility, and a lifelong commitment to community. His story is not only a celebration of longevity but of a life lived with purpose, connection, and enduring enthusiasm.
