School news

This week, Glenalmond College has hosted a dynamic and educational series of events in celebration of Science Week, aligning with the theme of ‘Change and Adapt’ from British Science Week.

Pupils were immersed in a wide range of hands-on activities, including an exciting robotics workshop led by the Royal Navy’s STEM engagement team. The session featured practical challenges where pupils worked under pressure to build bridges, showcasing their teamwork and problem-solving skills

A special highlight was the return of OG Patrick Crawford, who shared his expertise in subsea salvage. Another OG-led session was led by James Risk, who hosted a workshop called 'The Practical Side Of Being A Vet'.

Pupils also enjoyed an educational trip to Edinburgh Zoo, where they explored the science behind animal conservation. This trip highlighted the vital role science plays in protecting endangered species and maintaining biodiversity. Pupils also had a workshop with Dr Ruth McGowan from Scotland’s Rural College which covered the topic of ‘The Wonders of Biology’, where pupils explored plant and animal cells using bioviewers.

In addition to these activities, Craigclowan senior pupils joined our Glenalmond juniors for a series of engaging science workshops. Later on in the week, our senior science pupils visited Craigclowan to deliver a science-themed assembly and lead workshops on various scientific topics.

Adding to the week’s festivities, Dr Armstrong gave a Chapel talk on the theme of ‘Change and Adapt’, focusing on biological context and the ways in which life evolves to meet new challenges.

Jon Devlin from the University of Strathclyde hosted a fascinating workshop on ‘Modelling Infectious Disease Spread’, where pupils used ping-pong balls and mathematical models to simulate how diseases can spread through populations—an excellent blend of science and mathematics.

Glenalmond's Head of Mathematics, Mike Jeffers led an engaging and competitive workshop on designing the most aerodynamic paper aeroplane, challenging pupils to apply their understanding of aerodynamics in a hands-on, fun way.

A special thank you goes to Dr Fleming for organizing this year’s Science Week, which offered our pupils a wealth of educational experiences that broadened their understanding of science in both theory and practice.

We look forward to continuing these exciting learning opportunities and extending our thanks to all those involved in making Science Week 2025 a success.
