Brooks School Exchange

12 Mar 2025
School news

Earlier this term, Glenalmond pupils, Molly D and Basel A, had the opportunity to take part in the exchange programme with Brooks School in Massachusetts, USA. Immersing themselves in American school life, they embraced new academic and cultural experiences while sharing their own Scottish perspectives.

They recently shared their experiences in this article for Brooks School but their advice, to any pupils considering an exchange, is simple: go for it. As Molly states in the article: “Don’t be scared to get involved and get to know people. Having people to talk to will make your whole experience a lot more enjoyable.” She also encouraged future exchange students to be proactive: “Make sure to let people know what you want to do in and outside of school early on so you don’t have to cram it all in during your last week.”

Basel echoes Molly's opinions, urging others to seize the chance. “Go on exchange immediately! A bad experience would only last so long, but missing out would last forever. Take that new class, eat that new dish, and definitely play that new sport!”

This year marks a special milestone for the Brooks Exchange. Originally established by John Wright in 2000, the programme celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2025. Over the years, 46 Glenalmond pupils have taken part, with only a brief pause during COVID. To mark the occasion, our Deputy Head, Pupil & Staff Development, Steve Smith, and Director of Studies, Dr Caroline Murie, will visit Brooks School during half-term. Their visit will strengthen professional links and offer further insights into the American education system.

The Brooks exchange is just one of several international opportunities available to Glenalmond pupils. Our exchange programmes foster global awareness, independence, and lifelong friendships. In addition to our partnership with Brooks, pupils can experience school life in countries such as New Zealand and South Africa, engaging in academics, co-curricular activities, and community initiatives.

Now, as we welcome Brooks School pupils Leo and Abigail to Glenalmond, we look forward to continuing this fantastic partnership. If you’re thinking about an exchange, we highly recommend it, it’s an experience you’ll never forget.
