Entrepreneur, Economist, and Long-Serving Camden Councillor
We are saddened to share the passing of Glenalmond College alumnus John Mills (Patchell's 1951-1956), who died on April 6 at the age of 86.
Born in Hampstead Garden Suburb in 1938, John was educated at Glenalmond before studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Merton College, Oxford. A lifelong entrepreneur, he founded JML—now a household name in consumer product retail—starting from the basement of his family home.
Beyond business, John was a dedicated public servant and Labour Party supporter, serving as a Camden councillor for over three decades and holding multiple senior roles, including chair of both the housing and finance committees. He was also a prominent voice in the Eurosceptic movement and a generous donor to the Labour Party.
Known for his intelligence, humility, and good humour, John earned respect across political and professional divides. He is remembered as a true gentleman and mentor to many.
John is survived by his wife Marjorie, a son, and three daughters.
His funeral will take place on May 2 at St Michael's Church, in South Grove, Highgate, at 3pm.
