The odds are higher with the over 50s that injury or ill-health will have an effect, and so it proved this year. John Laird was diagnosed with Shingles on the Friday. Despite numerous phone calls, by Saturday morning, we only had a replacement for the Sunday, but John selflessly arrived to play that afternoon. Unfortunately, despite his best efforts, we managed to finish only 5th in the Stableford, meaning we were drawn against 6th-placed Loretto in the Wooden Spoon match.
On the Sunday, Graham Stewart came in for John Laird, and we coasted to victory over Loretto 2.5-0.5.
In the semis, Merchiston defeated Strathallan, and Edinburgh Academy defeated Fettes. In the final, Merchiston beat the Academy in extra holes to record an unprecedented fifth win in a row.
A big thank you to John Laird and also to Graham Stewart for stepping in at short notice and winning his match.
Team: Sandy Gray & Stephen Titterington, Jim Patrick & John Gordon, Niall Booker & John Laird (Sat)/Graham Stewart (Sun).
