OG Golf Society

“Elite” is defined as “a select group that is superior in qualities to the rest of a group or society”.

And so it was that an “elite” group of members of the English branch of the OGGS “knights” gathered from the shires on July 4th to do battle on the Royal links of  Wimbledon.  To the victor the spoils and the right to be crowned “King of England” and hoist aloft a fabulous silver trophy.

Queue Elgar music and the sound of galloping horses.

Ok so that’s the Netflix version!

Back to reality. A group of the willing, the keen and the able congregated for some luxurious mid-week golf. The club provided a feast to nourish us before we “battled” 18 holes of Stableford.  Those that were carrying injuries or ailments boarded electric chariots followed by the foot soldiers with bags and trolleys.  All left the spike bar in good spirits. Some returned in better spirits. Others returned to drink their own spirits!

The course was running hard and true after a mini spring drought. Those brought up on the coast were able to keep the ball low, use the contours and roll the ball to a stop at will. Inlanders with long hang times and high fades found conditions more challenging.

3 golfers emerged so tightly grouped that your scribe had to take independent advice on how to manage a “count back”. One not having taken place in the 20 years of his secretarial role. The stableford point count was respectable, but due to GDPR remains confidential!

And so from a gallant group of golfers emerged a new leader.  One hoisted to the throne for a 2nd time. Arise “King William”.  Conqueror of all England OG golfers.

Congratulations to Bill McCall- Champion golfer 2025.

OGGS English Evening Golf 1 - Summer Golf 2#

“I’ll call you back.  I’m in a meeting”.  Or “I’m out of the office on a course”. How many times have we had that bounceback message from someone we are trying to get a hold of? Do we ever query what kind of “meeting” they are in or what “course” they are on?  Hopefully not.

Thank goodness for “flexible” working. Allowing a group of younger OG golfers to have a “meeting” on a “course” and sneak out for a few holes of early evening golf.  We picked a glorious evening. Bringing back nostalgic memories of Carnies after hours. The nights are not quite as long as Perthshire, but long enough to nearly complete 18.

Next outing on the evening of 24th July for those who can bundle their clubs past security.

Naming and shaming the workshy.  David Walker, David Gordon, Kerr Nimmo and Cameron Grieve.
