Since its inception, it has been viewed by pupils as one of the “must do” activities before leaving Glenalmond College. Despite conditions ranging from rain and fog to ice and snow, the runners are not deterred, and each person strives for the finish at Front Arch. Mini-buses transport the runners to the start line at Amulree just after midday, and they must then traverse the 8.3 miles of off-road terrain through the Logiealmond Estate, up and down the notorious “Quarry” and back to the College, where a band of supporters wait to cheer them over the finish line at Front Arch.
The Heartbreak Run at Glenalmond College has been an annual feature of College life since 2016. Taking place on the final Sunday of the Michaelmas term, at around 8.3 miles and with over 1,100 ft of elevation gain, the run is not for the faint-hearted. The inaugural run saw a total of 12 pupils and staff take part, with this number growing year on year, with 62 participants in 2023 (made up of 52 pupils ranging from 3rd to 6th form, 1 OG, 9 members of staff, including the current Warden, Mark Mortimer, and one dog).
The 2023 run saw the cross-country captains organise a sponsorship opportunity, and thanks to the kind contributions from runners’ families and friends, £707 was raised for the Limbless Association.
The course record stands at 54:35, set in 2016 by Michael Lamb (U6th).
